A first session will look different for everyone, but you can expect to go over your basic history, what brings you into therapy, and what you’re hoping to get out of sessions. The therapist is there to learn more about you, and you’re there to make sure your therapist is a good fit for you.
-
Research is clear: the #1 determinant of how well you’ll do in therapy is your relationship to the therapist. It’s important you feel comfortable, understood, and at ease in the therapy space. After your first session, ask yourself the following questions:
Did the therapist ask good questions?
Did they seem knowledgeable or understanding of my concerns?
Did their personality seem to “work” with mine?
-
While everyone’s therapy process is different, many men report feeling a sense of relief to finally have someone to listen to them without judgement after a first session.
Within the first few sessions, you may find that you are able to apply insights, tools, or communication strategies in your weekly routine.
